A note:

I live in a state where you “have to” report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:

Assume everyone who doesn’t speak English is visiting.

Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know they’re not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. That’s terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborers’ clothes? I feel you, my dude, I can’t afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes it’s not even about “affording” them. They say they’ve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isn’t your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you don’t recall–you meet a lot of people.

And then, if you’re asked: no, you haven’t seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.

Scolding your kid for being curious about disability and wanting to ask questions is just another way of enforcing the ableist notion that disability is a shameful thing. It teaches your kid to ignore disabled people, which just makes us even more marginalized.
On the contrary, if you let your kids ask questions (like kids do), it allows the disabled person to reply to those questions and teach a valuable lesson that will give them insight into what a disabled life is actually like — and most importantly, it will likely make sure that your kid sees the disabled person as a human being with feelings and thoughts as opposed to a pitiable object.
I can assure you that the vast majority of disabled people do not find children’s curiosity offensive at all, so just let them ask. No harm done.
I just met the sweetest young girls while driving in my mobility aid today, and because they asked questions, I could assure them that I’m fine and that they don’t need to feel bad for me, and they gave me h u g s. These girls hugged me while I was sitting in my wheelchair, and that just proves that in one (1) minute, you can change someone’s perception of a minority group. Just by answering their questions.

So yesterday my friend and I watched Loving Vincent (an incredible movie, by the way, and the reason I’m on this van Gogh obsession lately). After it ended, we turned to each other like

we should make a van Gogh painting right now

So we impulsively grabbed all the paint in the house, rolled out a big sheet of paper, and just dove in. This was our reference:

She mixed colors for the sky, and I made a palette for the grass.

At first, we tried to match van Gogh’s style as closely as possible. This corner was decidedly a success.

She was a bit nervous to undertake the bold swirly tree in the middle, but I’d say it turned out great 👌👌

At some point, though, we realized other influences might have been creeping in. These flowers? Solidly Monet.

These? I don’t even know what style they are but they are my children and I love them

In total, this took us about 4 hours, give or take. We had to stop when it turned midnight, bc…… sleep.

It didn’t end up looking exactly like van Gogh’s original (or even very much like it, for that matter), but as he himself said, “what is done in love is well done,” and we certainly made this with love and enjoyed the process immensely.

And, if I may say so myself, it’s not bad for a first time.

Tyranny of the few is a pretty sweet deal if you belong to the few.

Looking at the map in the bottom right, literally ~5 states have the same population as NYC alone, and those five states get ten senators while NYC is just one city in the state of New York, which only gets 2 senators. Because each state, regardless of population, gets two senators, Wyoming with 579,315 people gets the same number of senators (1 senator / 289,657.5 people) as California does with 39,536,653 people (1 senator / 19,768,326.5 people). Essentially, one Wyomingite is worth 68.25 Californians.

Because the Republicans have the majority of low-population states, this is exaggerated even more when you look the entire senate. If you add up the population of states with both senators of the same party, and take half the population of states with one of each, you get one Democratic senator per 3,689,314 people, and one Republican senator per 2,779,541 people, because of how the senate is structured. In other words, 49 Democratic senators represent 180,776,374 people, and 51 Republican senators represent 141,756,607 people.

For the House, everyone knows it’s gerrymandered, and looking at the Vote % vs. Seat % makes it obvious. Republicans got 49.1% of the vote in the 2016 House elections but 55.4% of the seats, and Democrats got 48.0% of the vote but only 44.6% of the seats. A difference of 1.1% in the vote does not equal a difference of 10.8% seats. Similar to Virginia’s State Assembly election last year. The House elections are more exaggerated if you look at 2012′s election, where Democrats got 48.8% and Republicans got 47.6%; Democrats got 1.2% MORE of the vote, but 46.2% of the seats versus the Republicans’ 53.8% of the seats. Win 1.2% more of the vote but get 7.6% fewer seats?

The gerrymandering in the House is an easy fix if Democrats can just take over State legislatures and stop it, or if you’re worried about Democrats then gerrymandering, get a referendum/ballot measure to switch redistricting from state legislature to independent commission. Fixing the Senate’s structural bias, on the other hand, is much more difficult, because Clause 1 of Article 1, §3 of the Constitution states that each state has two senators, and the Seventeenth Amendment that changes the election procedures to popular vote rather than by state legislature keeps that “two senators per state,” meaning that a constitutional amendment would be required to change the number of senators, and why would any state want to reduce the percentage of senators it has and therefore its power in the Senate?

Speaking of which, constitutional amendments themselves are biased towards small states, because it states that ¾ of the states (38) have to ratify an amendment, meaning that 13 states can kill it. The smallest 13 states have 14,278,937 people, meaning the smallest 25% of states have just 4.39% of the population. Think about that; 4.39% of the population can override what the other 95.61% want, just because of the “3/4 of the states must ratify” component. On the other hand, the largest 12 states have 194,081,990 people, or 59.71%.

If you say “If it wasn’t like that then the small states wouldn’t have a say in government!” Well, how is that unfair? Government is supposed to represent the people, and it isn’t representing everyone if a small number of people have more power/say than a large number of people. That’s the entire problem of the “The top one percent of one percent holding XX% of all the wealth” thing.

I finally made this design I’ve been wanting to make for two years now!

When I first started questioning if I was autistic, I was too shy to say the word autistic so whenever I talked to my girlfriend about it I would always say pawtistic. I still think it’s cute, and I’ve always liked how cats have some stereotypical “autistic” behaviors that I relate to! (picky about food, easily overstimulated, scared by loud noises, frequently misunderstood). I know it sounds a bit silly, but as someone who’s loved cats my whole life it was strangely comforting

I want to make this as a sticker design and (if enough people are interested) an enamel pin design! Comment if that’s something you’d be interested in seeing aha ^o^

Anyways the cat is supposed to resemble the rainbow infinity symbol! I hope that comes across well

The United States has a long, sordid history of separating families: The Transatlantic Slave Trade and the families impacted by slavery for generations after being stolen from their homes and sold to the highest bidder, for one. The Bureau of Indian Affairs boarding schools, where Native children were ripped from their families in order to have their language, culture, and beliefs stamped out of them through forced assimilation and conversion to Christianity, for another.

The United States has an awful history of putting people in detention centres: Japanese and Native Alaskan internment camps during WWII, Fort Cass, Fort Snell, and other Native American internment camps that Indigenous Peoples were forced into throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, not even to mention Guantanamo Bay, and the camps so-called dissidents in the places like the Philippines, Vietnam, and other nations Americans had occupied were put into.

The United States has always been horrible to its immigrants, specifically non-white and/or non-Christian refugees. My own grandfather, an immigrant form India, couldn’t become a citizen of the United States despite being a college lecturer and the spouse of a US citizen due to Asian Exclusion, and had to continuously enrol in university courses he never actually took despite the fact that he was teaching them, just to stay in the country on a student visa. The one truly valid comparison to the Holocaust era you could make would be to the United States turning away Jewish refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe aboard the St Louis and sending them back to their deaths because that same law used to keep my grandfather from becoming a citizen had been put in place specifically to keep more Jews and Asians from coming into the country.

Like, the United States is not “becoming Nazi Germany” all of a sudden. This is not some aberrant “UnAmerican” behaviour. This is the United States being the United States, doing what the U.S. has always done from the moment of its inception.

Also, as one of my FB friends said on this topic recently: “Nazi Germany was not famous for cruelty toward asylum seekers, it was famous for making millions of asylum seekers and then murdering millions including many from my family.”

There is no good reason to constantly trot out bad Holocaust comparisons when we know damn well this is the same inhumane bullshit America was fucking built on. Hitler, Nazis, and The Holocaust are not just shorthand for “the government being really bad.” It was a specific atrocity that devastated the Jewish and Romani communities of this world, and you don’t need to constantly devalue it and re-traumatise Jews and Roma over and over again when you can just as easily condemn the heinous way asylum seekers at the US border are being treated by saying the United States is still in the business of systematic oppression and has not learnt anything from its own appalling history.
